What is an Aspect Ratio?
An aspect ratio defines the proportional relationship between width and height, written as W∶H. A 16:9 frame that is 1920px wide will always be 1080px tall — the ratio holds at any resolution.
Aspect ratios appear everywhere: video production (16:9 for HD, 21:9 for cinema), photography (3:2 from DSLRs, 4:3 from compact cameras), social media (1:1 for Instagram, 9:16 for TikTok and Reels), and UI/UX design (device frames, ad banners, thumbnails).
How to use this calculator
Enter a ratio in the top row (e.g. 16 and 9), then type either a width or height and click Solve Height or Solve Width. You can also enter both dimensions and click Detect Ratio to find the simplified ratio for any resolution.
Use the preset buttons to jump instantly to standard ratios, or type any custom decimal values for unusual proportions like 2.39:1 (anamorphic cinema) or 1.85:1 (flat widescreen).
